Childcare in San Antonio: The $890-a-Month Line Your Moving Budget Is Missing

Center-based infant care averages about $890 a month in San Antonio, and a year of it runs about $10,680, according to DaycareCalc's 2026 data, which puts the city roughly 28% below the national average of about $1,230 a month. Other sources land higher: Winnie puts center-based infant care at about $1,349 a month. When families run the relocation budget, housing gets the attention and childcare gets the afterthought, yet in San Antonio it can cost more than a car payment every single month. Here is the honest line to budget, and how to read it.

When families run the relocation budget, housing gets the attention and childcare gets the afterthought, yet in San Antonio it can cost more than a car payment every single month. Here is the honest line to budget, and how to read it.

The number that belongs in every moving budget

DaycareCalc's 2026 estimate puts full-time center-based infant care in San Antonio at about $890 a month, roughly 28% below the national average of about $1,230 a month it reports for 2026. One year of infant care at that rate is about $10,680. Winnie, which tracks actual provider listings, estimates center-based infant care higher, around $1,349 a month, with toddler care about $892 and preschool about $797. A third estimate built on federal market-rate data lands near $741 a month. None of these is wrong, exactly: they measure different mixes of providers and neighborhoods. The honest takeaway is that full-time infant care in San Antonio runs roughly $750 to $1,350 a month depending on where and how you choose.

Why the estimate matters more than the exact number

For a moving budget, precision matters less than the size of the line. Two children in center-based care, an infant and a toddler, run about $1,782 a month at DaycareCalc's city averages, which is close to the principal and interest payment on a $300,000 mortgage at today's rates, roughly $2,050 a month. Families who budget the mortgage and forget childcare discover the shortfall in month one, when the first tuition bill lands next to the first mortgage payment, the first utility bill, and the moving truck invoice.

What the price includes, and what it does not

Center-based rates usually cover the full-time schedule, roughly 40 to 50 hours a week, and often include meals for older kids. They rarely include diapers, formula, or before-and-after-school care for school-age children. In-home family care is often cheaper and more flexible, and it is also less regulated in Texas than licensed centers, which is a real difference to understand, not a reason to avoid it by itself. When you compare care, compare the same schedule math: hours, ages, meals, and what happens on school closure days.

The tax help you may already have

If your employer offers a dependent care flexible spending account, the money you set aside for childcare is not taxed, which softens the real cost by your marginal tax rate. Plenty of Texas employers offer one, and it is worth asking about before you sign up for tuition. Federal child care tax credits can also reduce the bill for qualifying families. The exact numbers shift with the tax year and your income, so check the current rules with a tax professional rather than relying on a year-old headline.

Questions to ask before you commit

The price list tells you the range. The tour tells you the reality. Ask about the details that change the monthly number, because they are easier to check before you move than after.

  • What is the actual monthly rate for your child's age, and what does it include? Rates change when a child moves from the infant to the toddler room.
  • How long is the waitlist? In-demand centers around the city run waitlists months out, so get on them before you move, not after.
  • What are the staff-to-child ratios, and is the center licensed in Texas? Licensing details and inspection history are public.
  • Does the schedule match your commute? Centers close at a set hour, and late pickup fees add up fast on a bad traffic day.
  • What happens on holidays, teacher workdays, and summer? Those gaps often cost extra or need a backup plan.

Childcare is a monthly line, not a lifestyle detail, and it belongs in the same spreadsheet as your mortgage estimate, your property tax estimate, and your moving costs.

How this fits the bigger decision

None of this is a reason to skip the move, and it is also not a line to discover later. When we talk through where to live, I help buyers put the whole monthly number on the table: the mortgage, the taxes, the insurance, the utilities, and yes, the childcare. Neighborhoods that look equal on price can differ by hundreds of dollars a month once the commute, the tax bill, and the care options are added. That is the kind of honest math a good move is built on.
