The numbers, sourced
Workforce Solutions Alamo counted 10,100 jobs added over the year ending July 2026, a 0.9% growth rate. Texas Workforce Commission data for August 2026 puts metro employment at 1,195,900, up 9,500 over the year. Unemployment was 4.7% in July 2026, slightly below Texas' 4.8%. The monthly numbers are choppy, up 1,500 in May, down 1,800 in June, down about 1,600 in August, so the trend matters more than any single month.
Who employs San Antonio
Joint Base San Antonio is the anchor, employing more than 82,000 people directly and making it the largest joint base in the Department of Defense. CHRISTUS Health employs about 7,595, HCA Healthcare about 4,017, and H-E-B and USAA, which is headquartered in San Antonio, round out the top of the list. Healthcare, military, cybersecurity, and tourism anchor the economy, which gives the market a diversification most Texas metros would envy.
What job stability means for buying
Employment anchors the rent-versus-buy decision. The medical corridor around the South Texas Medical Center and the north-side employer clusters support steady demand in those suburbs, and the base drives the corridors around Lackland, Fort Sam Houston, and Randolph. If your job is stable, buying converts rent into equity; if it is not, renting shortens your risk. The job data tells you which situation you are in.
The honest caveats
San Antonio's growth is steady, not explosive. Austin added about 7,500 jobs in August 2026 alone while San Antonio shed about 1,600, and the unemployment rate ticked up from 4.0% in March to 4.7% in July. The market is not a boom market, and buying here is a long-term decision, not a bet on next month's headline. That is exactly how I advise clients: buy for the decade, not the quarter.
Where the jobs point you
Match the commute to the employer before you match the neighborhood to the price. The north and northwest corridors serve the medical and corporate clusters, the military corridors serve the bases, and downtown serves the growing tech and cyber scene. Drive the route at the time you would actually commute, then compare communities on that basis.
