San Antonio School Districts, Ranked: The 2026 Niche Ratings for Relocating Parents

For relocating families, the school question usually comes before the home question, and the 2026 Niche ratings give it a concrete shape: Alamo Heights ISD ranks A+, the top district in the San Antonio area and #12 in Texas, while Boerne ISD (A, #33 in the state) and Comal ISD (A, #52) lead the Hill Country and northeast sides. North East ISD holds an A and Northside ISD a B+. Here is how to read those grades honestly, and how they should, and should not, shape your move.

This pairs with the ratings: the mistake I see parents make when the letter grade on a district page does all the thinking.

How to read a district rating honestly

A Niche letter grade weighs test scores, teacher quality, college readiness, resources, and student life into a single mark, and the number next to it is the district's position among hundreds of Texas districts in the 2026 edition. A grade is a useful screen, not a verdict. It tells you where a district sits on a broad set of measures, and it cannot tell you whether a specific campus is right for your child. Treat it as the first filter in a longer conversation, not the last word.

Alamo Heights ISD: the A+ at the top

Niche's 2026 edition gives Alamo Heights ISD an overall A+ and ranks it the #1 district in the San Antonio area and #12 in Texas. The district is small and central, serving the Alamo Heights area inside the city, and home prices around it reflect the demand. If it fits your budget and lifestyle, it is an easy answer. If the price does not fit, the districts below are still very strong, and the honest next question is which campus your family would actually attend.

Boerne ISD: the Hill Country A

Boerne ISD earns an A in the 2026 ratings and ranks #3 in the San Antonio area and #33 in Texas. It serves Boerne and the Highway 46 corridor, where you trade commute time for a Hill Country setting, larger lots, and small-town character. Families who work downtown or at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston should drive the route in rush hour once before falling for the landscape. The commute, not the grade, is the trade-off to test first.

Comal ISD: the growing A

Comal ISD also carries an A, ranking #6 in the San Antonio area and #52 in Texas for 2026. It covers New Braunfels, Garden Ridge, and the fast-growing northeast, and that growth matters twice: the district is adding campuses near new construction, and the schools a home feeds into can shift as boundaries are redrawn. Ask for the current attendance boundaries before you pick a lot, not just the district name on the builder's sign.

The big-city districts: North East and Northside

North East ISD holds an A and ranks #7 in the San Antonio area, and Northside ISD carries a B+ with a #12 area rank and #269 in Texas for 2026. Both cover enormous footprints, and a district letter grade is an average across dozens of campuses. Inside either district, the honest approach is to evaluate the specific school your address feeds, because an A-plus campus and a struggling one can sit in the same district.

The feeder pattern is the real question

Every Texas address feeds a specific elementary, middle, and high school, and the boundaries are set by the district, not by real estate websites. Two homes a mile apart can feed entirely different campuses, which is how buyers end up surprised after closing. When you shortlist a home, ask for the official attendance boundaries in writing and trace the feeder pattern end to end. This is where the ratings meet reality.

Ratings are a starting point, not a decision

A letter grade compresses years of data into one character, and it moves as cohorts move. The fuller picture includes the campus your address feeds, the commute, the budget, after-school fit, and the community itself. I walk relocating families through that fuller picture week after week, district by district, because the right school and the right home usually get decided together.
