PCS Peak Season: When to Book Your Move to San Antonio

About 40% of the nearly 400,000 military household goods shipments the Department of Defense arranges each year move during peak season, May 15 through August 31, according to the Government Accountability Office, and the same reports note DoD accounts for roughly 15% of all moves in the American moving industry. When one customer is that big, its busiest months strain the whole system, and service members feel it as missed pickup days and late arrivals. Here is what that means for a PCS to JBSA, and the honest timing plan.

Here is what that means for a PCS to JBSA, and the honest timing plan.

This is the video I send every family with orders to JBSA; it pairs with the timing plan above.

The 40% number that explains the summer crush

GAO-20-295, the watchdog's report on DoD's personal property program, put DoD at roughly 400,000 household goods shipments a year, with about 40% of them occurring during the May 15 to August 31 peak period. Some industry reports have put the summer share higher, around 65%, in busier years. Either way the pattern is the same: the summer window concentrates nearly half a year's moving demand into roughly a third of the calendar, and moving companies can only add so many trucks and crews.

Why system capacity breaks down in summer

DoD is the largest single customer in the U.S. moving industry, about 15% of all domestic and international moves per GAO, so its peak season is the industry's peak season. Military OneSource's PCS guidance says capacity constraints are particularly acute during the summer months, and newer GAO work (GAO-25-107771) counts roughly 300,000 shipments a year at a cost of about $2 billion while flagging gaps in how the program tracks its own performance. The practical effect for a family with summer orders: fewer pickup windows, tighter dates, and more risk of a shipment that arrives later than planned.

What changed for 2026 booking windows

In 2026, DoD moved household goods booking windows earlier specifically to spread the load across moving companies during peak season, per Army Times coverage of the reform. That means the planning clock starts sooner: mark the day your booking window opens, request your dates the first morning it is available, and have your weight estimate and pickup address ready before you call. Waiting a week can mean waiting a month for a truck.

The fallback if your orders are locked to summer

If summer dates are not optional for you, the playbook is: book the instant the window opens, consider a personally procured move if your situation fits, ship a vehicle separately so it is not part of the same truck, and build a buffer into your arrival before your report date. Give your housing search the same cushion: a short-term rental that flexes for 15 to 30 days protects you when a shipment runs late, and the same buffer makes your San Antonio home purchase calmer instead of rushed.

Why a winter PCS to San Antonio can be a gift

The flip side of the peak-season crush is that fall and winter moves face far less competition for dates and crews. And because the San Antonio housing market slows down in the holidays, fewer listings but serious buyers, a winter PCS often means better moving logistics and a calmer house hunt in the same season. If your orders give you any scheduling flexibility, it is worth more than you might think.
